Year 1 put on a play

This week in Literacy we have been acting out the story of Cinderella. Each group took on the different roles in Cinderella and made up their own dialogue. The plays were brilliant.

Here Prince Charming brings the glass slipper for the Ugly Sisters and Cinderella to try on.

The audience were enthralled.

The cast takes a bow and the audience shouts bravo!

A new take on Cinderella as the Step Father and Ugly Brothers take to the stage

Next week we will be independently writing our own Cinderella stories. I'm sure all our hardwork this week will pay off in our writing. I can't wait to read the stories.

Forensic science day

Year 1 had an exciting forensic science day. Check out our pictures to see what we got up to.

The children heard all about what clues a forensic scientist looks for. We examined our fingerprints and compared the different footprints that our pumps would make.

We had to put the forensic tape around our "victim" first.

Then we used tweezers and magnifying glasses to find evidence.

Very thorough girls, checking the pockets.

After we had collected all the evidence we talked about what we had found and what it could mean.

What a fantastic opportunity year 1. You all worked so hard, well done you made great forensic scientists.

A sad goodbye

On the 27th February we said a sad goodbye to a member of our class. To celebrate his time with us we had a goodbye party and presented him with some cards that the children had made themsleves.

All the children had signed the card and written good luck messages.

The children (and teachers) enjoyed delicious cakes made by mum......thanks mum.

You will be missed but we wish you lots of luck in your new school. Keep in touch through the blog and let us know what you are up to.

Solving a maths problem

Last week in our maths we were looking at the question "Are the oldest people the tallest?" This promoted some great discussion, here are some of the responses
"yes because every year you have a birthday and you get bigger"
"yes because my daddy's older than my mummy and he's tallest"
"no because grannies are little and bended over"
"no because my mummy wears high heels and then she's tallest"

We then got to work measuring ourselves to see if we could find evidence to agree or disagree with the question asked.

At the end of the week and after measuring and comparing the "young" Mrs Harman and the "old" Mrs Longhawn we concluded that we couldn't agree that the oldest person is always the tallest.

Hot Chocolate

Over the next few weeks we will be offering the children a drink of hot chocolate one moring a week. The idea is to help children practise their use of money in a real life context. We will be using pretend money to make a different amount each time the children buy the hot chocolate. The hot chocolate will be made with water so that all the children can participate. If you have any questions about our new money initiative please let me know.

This week the children have been working so hard. We had an art and drama focus during our topic lessons and the children produced some super work.

These magnificent collage teapots are just a sample of the super work that everyone did. I love the furry handle for comfort.
We showed some of the observational rose paintings in our KS1 achievement assembly, they were very impressive.

In Literacy we have completed our class dictionary and this week the children showed even more independence in their writing .

We have over 60 words in our dictionary and it's ready for children to use in their independent work.

In maths we have continued to look at partitioning a 2 digit number. Having this week to consolidate learning has been fantastic and all the children have shown an increased confidence in identifying tens and units.

What an excellent week we have had in Year 1. Everyone has enjoyed watching the Alice in Wonderland movie and the children’s recall of the plot and characters was excellent. We also had our first visit as a whole class to the ICT suite where we created fantastic pictures of Alice and the Cheshire cat. Look out for these in our role play area.

Next week our focus is on Drama and Art with the children acting out the Mad Hatter’s tea party, painiting the Red Queen’s roses and creating collage teapots!

In maths we have been learning to partition numbers into tens and units. We did this in a practical way using playdough and cubes.

Can you tell me how many towers of 10 would you need to make the number 28?

A fantastic start to the New Year

At last the New Year has started. I have spent my Christmas holidays looking forward to meeting Year 1 again. The children (and staff) have been superstars and have made me feel very welcome. All the children have worked really hard this week especially with their independent writing about their Christmas holidays. I was very proud our budding authors.

The children spotted rhyming words in the puzzle then wrote a caption for the rhyme.

The girls were making their own number lines which showed the vlaue of
each number 1 - 20.

Our topic this term is "The Mad Hatters tea party". Next week we will be finding out all about the adventures of Alice in Wonderland and creating our tea party role play area together.

Oooops Agents were busy around Christmas time and missed their crowning, but here is what we had to say about them.

Agent L shares his construction work with us!!

Agent L - The cheeky smiler. Agent L is one of the enthusiastic learners in year one, when he is good, he is really really good... He can be kind and helpful to others and always goes out of his way to help his teacher. It’s the smile!

Agent D - A little treasure with a great attitude to learning. Agendt D has especially thought about others this week and tried to help them out. This was a pleasure to see. Well done.

Agent F and Agent E

Agent F Agent F is trying hard and has settled into year 1 very well. He always has good manners and is willing to share with everyone. These are the star qualities of a golden child, well done.

Agent E Wow! Agent E is working so well and doing the right thing all the time. She helps to teach the class our story with all the actions. She helps others when she has finished tidying. She displays all the golden behaviours, like sharing and using polite manners. Briliant!

Secret Agent P - Agent P has found it a little hard to settle in this term because she misses home but everyday she brings out her smile and try her best in everything. She sits quietly on the carpet and is always ready to get busy. Well done.

Secret Agent J- Agent J is our fantastic artist and model maker. She can be a little shy when she finds things difficult but she always makes an effort. Last week she brought in stickers to share for people sitting beautiful. She is kind and thoughtful and willing to help others do the right thing.

Last week Year 1 have been learning about measuring things with their hand spans. They collected different objects from around the room and then measured them to see if their hand span was wider than the object of not wider.

This week we talked about the Creepy Chameleon

We watch some Wildlife finder clips and watch the Chameleon change colours. We found out that Chameleons Camouflage themselves when they are frightened this means they can blend into their surroundings and it makes it hard to see them.

Who has been in the Gold Book?

Sometimes in Year 1 we are secret agents, especially when we are going on a learning mission. Entering Gold Book is quite a mission is Miss Caddle's class, here are some of our agents that have completed the mission already.

We are proud to be in the Gold Book

Secret Agent D has settled really well in year one. He has worked hard to show golden behaviours all the time. He sits quietly on the carpet and always tries to listen. Well done Agent D, keep bringing your smile every day.

Secret Agent T has had an excellent start to the school year. Agent T has been an always child right at the beginning of the year. She is helpful, kind and really listens well in class. Well done Tia.

Secret Agent M has been brilliant from the start of the term. She always tries to do the right thing. Sometimes she is shy but then out comes her confidence as she tries a little harder and shows great results.

I have been really pleased with Agent J he always tries his best and is working really well in year 1. A great start to the new term Agent J, keep it up.

This week we talked about the importance of washing our hands so that we can keep away germs.

On Monday we had our Children's University launch assembly. Children could choose from a wide range of courses ranging from Harry Potter club, to cookery club and netball. It was very difficult to decide!!

This morning we went for a visit to Strikes Garden Centre near Red Hall Lane. We had lots of help from some kind parents and walked all the way there and back! Mrs Warner was a crossing patrol lady!!!

We are very fortunate to be able to borrow some unusual and interesting objects from Artimis Loan Services. This term we have asked for things about "Fairies".

Our topic is called "Down at the bottom of the garden" and many years ago when I was a little girl, I watch Blue Peter and found out that fairies really do live at the bottom of gardens!

This week we have been reading the traditional story, Goldilocks and the three bears.

In maths we continued with our co-ordinates work and made our own grid linked to Goldilocks story. With Beebot's help we found different co-ordinates on the grid.

Thursday is Book day and you can come to school dressed as a book character.

In the story Alice in Wonderland, Alice tasted lots of different things. This week we made some peppermint creams using;

When the creams dried we melted some chocolate and dipped them.

We have been watching cartoons about Hector. He is a dolphin and lives in the ocean with his friends. He learns about the dangers of sharing personal information and what cyber bullying is.

In the story Alice in Wonderland, Alice drank liquids with the label "Drink Me" and ate food with the label "Eat Me"
During circle time we talked about how we keep ourselves safe, what we do when we see cleaning products and medicines around the house.

It was quite tricky making sure we added the correct information in the correct space.

We had to follow instructions and listen carefully.
We had to remember to put the strap around our wrist at all times.
We found out about the lens, the view finder, the flash and how to put the photographs onto the classroom computer.

We have a Mad Hatter's Tea Party as our new role play area. Dressing up in different clothes is lots of fun. For your learning log homework can you show me how you celebrate different events with your family?

You could draw a picture of a party you have been to.
Write a list of all the party food you enjoy eating.
Design some clothes for a special celebration.

Well done to the following children for working so hard.

Lucy always listens and follows instructions. She is helpful in class and enjoys sharing the things she brings from home.

Mia consistently displays an excellent attitude towards school and is a very kind. She joined Year 1 from another school and has made many good friends.

The children have been doing some very interesting work about light and dark with Miss Greig.
